Your Cup Of This Week's Strongest Marketing Tip: Find Your Why

Marketing Caffeine

Every Thursday, right on time for your coffee break, we will give you a quick dose of “marketing caffeine” to uplevel your marketing and in turn uplevel the results you are seeing at your business.

I hope you enjoyed your holiday. If you read the last issue you know that I pulled a “Christmas With the Kranks” move. If you haven’t seen the movie, the family essentially wanted to skip Christmas and take a vacation in paradise instead. So this year, instead of my usual thanksgiving dinner with extended family I packed up the family and went to an indoor waterpark.

What was eye opening was that when I came back on Friday, I was more refreshed than I have been in months and spent half of Friday emailing my team with ideas that just starting flowing into my head.

As a business owner, you must take time to totally disconnect from your business, I just decided to also disconnect from a holiday as well :)

30 weeks and still going strong (with the help of good caffeine) issue #30.

YOUR CUP OF THIS WEEK'S STRONGEST MARKETING TIP

brooke-lark-489997-unsplashFinding Your Why

This has been a topic that has haunted me for years. It’s also one of those topics that I have been hearing for years and years, you gotta know your why. It’s interesting because for many years, I really didn’t have a why. My why was to simply make money and grow a business. Yes I wanted to help my clients grow, but I really never thought of that as my why.

A few years ago I started the No Joke Marketing brand. For almost a year I agonized over finding the right name. I went back and forth across well over a thousand different names. I checked to see if the .com was available (or for sale), I checked to see if it was a registered trademark and more of a hunch if it was good or not.

Then I decided to change things up and focus on finding my why.

Here is what I did:

  1. I locked myself into a conference room outside of my office with a whiteboard.

  2. I turned off my phone, my email, and didn’t bring my laptop.

  3. I wrote this on the board:

    1. To _________ So That ______.

The first blank represents your contribution — the contribution you make to the lives others through your WHY. And the second blank represents the impact of your contribution.

I wish I could take the credit for this, but this is from Simon Sinek (his book is below).

What I very quickly realized was that I was not in a contribution mindset, I was thinking way too technical and way too focused on money.

And then it hit me like a ton of bricks.

The new company name hit me first. No Joke Marketing. It came with the premise that I believe that marketing is the single most important function in every single business.

I kept writing on the board serious marketing, no holds barred marketing and various phrases that all related.

And then my why appeared like the lights you see in Las Vegas.

To Save Small Businesses by fixing their marketing So That their business can stand the test of time and they can pursue their why.

My why is to save small businesses with my conduit being fixing their marketing.

Armed with this why my “corporate” marketing is much more dialed in, the clients we bring in are a better fit and my team is aligned around a single why.

Find your why friends, find your why.

SIMON SINEK: START WITH WHY

The third time's the charm. Gosh do I love this book. Anytime I start to question myself, I love to re-read this book.

The premise is simple: it’s not how you do it, it’s WHY you do it. Your why should drive you and the way you act and communicate. When you have an authentic why, you and your business become unstoppable.

Businesses have been shifting their advertising budget from Facebook and Instagram feed ads to Facebook and Instagram Stories ads due to the lower costs and better results they see with Stories ads.

Simon Lejeune, head of user acquisition at flight-booking app Hopper, told Marketing Land that they shifted 50 percent of their Instagram ads budget to Instagram Stories ads “when we realized installs were cheaper on Instagram Stories, but also that users coming from that placement were converting almost three times better than users coming from the Facebook News Feed.”
